Abstract

Based on the traffic problems faced daily in Brazilian cities, including Brasília, there is an urgent need for a paradigm shift. It is known that such changes are more likely to be effective when started before adulthood. From this, the idea arose to create a board game to explain the city’s mobility to children and teenagers, making them more critical regarding the relationship between means of transport and the socioeconomic aspects of its residents. From this perspective, the research aimed to verify how young people assimilate the playful information contained in games and reproduce it. For this, a partner high school (Colégio Sërios) of the higher education institution (UniCEUB) to which this research is linked was chosen. The methodological steps that supported the qualitative study were as follows: in the first stage (Focus Group), the moderator guided a group of 6 students from the partner institution to build a collective debate for about 1 hour, with the aim of studying and understanding the participants’ views; in the second, instead of preparing drawings of the physical elements present in the city (as initially proposed), it was preferred to select only the most significant elements in the city of Brasília for the participants, since there was a delay in the research approval by the Ethics Committee, given that the work involved minors; in the third (Creation of Game Rules) and fourth stages (Preparation of the board and pieces), it was found that the young people were very cooperative and flexible in developing the rules and presenting their ideas; and, in the fifth, the first game played among its creators, it was observed that some adjustments to the created rules were needed. Therefore, throughout the stages, a high level of critical thinking regarding urban mobility issues was observed among the participants, making communication and understanding of the topics addressed simpler. There was some dissatisfaction with the way traffic occurs, as according to the participants, in many cases there is no awareness in the choice of means of transport by city users, which fostered the focus on strategies to convey a critical view through the game. It is concluded, therefore, that the playful strategies contained in games contribute to greater interaction of young people with the content expressed therein, making it possible to stimulate, through this type of artifact, a more conscious view of the use of means of transport and their relationship with socioeconomic aspects, as well as the effects they cause on the city’s ecosystem. However, it should be noted that the application of this research should be carried out in schools with lower income levels, as it is believed that the objective will be better achieved. Finally, it is emphasized that this type of strategy takes into account the evolution of teaching, the speed of learning, and also stimulates the focus of young people’s attention on the content taught, avoiding distractions that are
